What We Do
The Post and Auxiliary support a host of programs which pursue issues of national importance to veterans. These programs are designed to preserve veterans rights, advocate a strong national defense, promote patriotism and offer community service.
Although these programs are run locally, they are also a part of a
larger nationwide effort, administered through the VFW and Auxiliary National Headquarters.
These programs include:
- Americanism - This program teaches the community about our veterans and what they have done, and to teach and foster patriotism in our citizens.
- Buddy Poppy - This small red flower, inspired by the poem In Flanders Field has been adopted by veterans organizations around the world as reminder of what our veterans have sacrificed. Donations raised from the distribution of these flowers (usually around Memorial Day and Veterans Day) are used for helping veterans in need.
- Community Service - When our veterans fought for the freedoms we have today, their job was not done. Today, they continue their service by providing assistance to our citizens via a host of community projects.
- Hospital - This program supports our veterans in the
in VA Medical Centers and local nursing homes and hospitals.
- Legislative - The purpose of this program is to petition our legislators to preserve veterans rights and to advocate a strong national defense.
- Veterans and Family Support - This program includes assistance to veterans and their families outside the hospital, as well as assistance to our active duty military and their families. The VA assistance covers many areas (education, housing, financial services, the VA cemetery system, and much more (see all that the VA coveres). And our Veterans Service Officers can point you in the right direction.
- VFW National Home for Children - Located in Michigan, this is a home for families and children and grandchildren of VFW and Auxiliary members that need a place to live. It provides a safe home while they learn to face the various challenges of reintegration after sufering from post-traumatic stress, high unemployment and rehabilitation from battlefield injuries.
- Youth Activities - Assisting our youth -
the future of our nation, to help them understand our government, history, and patriotism. This is an important part of the VFW and Auxiliary. It not only offers youth scholarships, it teaches good citizenship, and what our veterans have done (and continue to do) for our nation.
For more information about any of these programs, contact the VFW Post at (919) 772-1062.
